Tom Olson

Thank you for such a wonderful and powerful introduction to NLP. I must admit that Friday night, I was feeling a mix of excitement and skepticism. Although I had already read three books on NLP, I still needed proof. I needed someone to show me that NLP was for real, and show me, you did. The skeptical voice in the back of my head was quickly quelled.

I appreciate the openness and respect you exhibited to the attendees through out the entire three days. But most of all it was fun, and for me, an adventure. I do plan to continue this adventure with additional training.

Thanks again for pointing out the possibilities. You are a great trainer and I look forward to training with you in the future.

Sincerely,
Tom Olson

Jonathan, I absolutely loved spending the weekend training with you in DC.

As a Licensed Master Practitioner, I was delighted to find myself learning new ways to further refine my skills and discovering new parts of my brain. That fingertip exercise you demonstrated--the one that increases interhemispherical communication in the brain--I use it daily and am impressed with the results. And I'm noticing that I have an even greater ability with language patterns.

My favorite part of the weekend, though, was watching the personal transformations made by other members of the class, specifically the skeptics. These folks went from "show me" to "show me more!" in an incredibly short period of time. You've helped them begin the process of dramatically improving their lives, and it was an honor to observe and take part in it.

Thanks, too, for spending extra time with the class... running longer than scheduled so you could share "just one more cool thing" with us, even having meals with us "out in the real world." We all got much more than we paid for.

I'm very glad I trained with you and Mastery InSight, and I'll very likely do so again in the future. Thanks again.

Over the course of the last 12 days I have experienced, in multiple ways, remarkable growth in mind and spirit. Thank you! I've come to realize, with your assistance, the vast potential there is in life. I am looking forward to a future I simply didn't have 2 weeks ago. I am becoming increasingly aware of what's out there and more importantly what's in here. Thank you again for a most incredible experience. Sincerely, Richard Alday. (PS) I greatly respect what you are doing, and hope, earnestly but not seriously(!), to do your teaching justice with my future.

Once again Jonathan has completed a training and brought us all to a beautiful crescendo, ascension of skills, clarity, and directed us in reframing the hovering hesitant past to a powerful present which is future-paced and has maximal integration. Thank you Jonathan.

Kay Pentecost, Database Solutions Developer

Picture a group of chronological adults, all wearing red clown noses, walking into a coffee shop in Tampa, Florida. The hostess walks up to seat us, and one of us looks at her and says: "Have you READ NOStradamus?"

She's laughing while she seats us at the best table in the place.... This is the kind of wonderful state you'll experience at Jonathan Altfeld's NLP Practitioner Training -- at least it's what we experienced last April, 1998.

For twelve amazing days in April and May the group of us learned about NLP through explanation, exercises, and trance (my favorite part).

A Typical Day:

We started most mornings about 9:30. Usually Jonathan would get the class started after some morning pleasantries by talking about something totally unrelated to NLP, like, dolphins, or something. Then, by the time I realized that what he was saying really meant something, and that I understood exactly what it was, the class paired off and did exercises together.

That first day, I remember, we paced breathing and eye blinks. It was harder than I thought it would be, but easier at the same time. And that it was so much clearer than reading about it. Even than trying to do it before the training... because I could, but just not quite easily... and especially not as easy as it's gotten since then. And that was the way all the skills we learned went. That first few minutes of concentrating on the technique... that sudden "I got it" feeling... and then the improvement on each basic skill as the training proceeded, knowing that the underlying skills were building even as the new ones were coming on....

So we did some exercises, and then Jonathan would ask us how the exercises went. And we'd see ourselves in everybody else... and through everybody else's eyes. And suddenly we're learning about first position, and second position, and realizing things about communicating. And we're getting all these AHA! moments. Jonathan clears up any questions... confusions... and we're off doing another exercise...

We usually stopped for lunch around 1:00, or 1:30, or 2:00, whenever everybody was willing to stop training and go eat! 'Cause the time flies by. And then you don't stop learning at lunch... because there's time for questions (well, there's always time for questions and answers) and more practice. Or just assimilating. And eating.

And then we're back in the training room, for cross-crawling exercises, physical exercises to develop both sides of the brain and the link between them. These are pretty neat -- it's amazing how hard they are to do at first, and how quickly they get easier. Jonathan introduces more at a harder level as we go along -- keeps the frustration -- uh -- challenge high!

Then more stories, and metaphors, (so that's what they were!) and learning without even trying, and learning even more with trying. More exercises... until we start getting hungry again. And sometimes eat late, and a couple of times come back and work some more after dinner.

On a couple of days we visited the Mall across the street. We practiced establishing non-verbal rapport with strangers, and got some pretty interesting responses!

At the end of the day, Jonathan closes the class for the night... with a few suggestions for powerful and wonderful dreams, and for integrating what's been learned.... And sometime during the night or the following morning we started realizing that so much more had been learned than we thought... that it was all about sensory acuity and rapport and so much more.

What We Covered:

A Lot!! Well, here's a list I came up with:

Building Sensory Acuity
Changing Our Own Behaviors
Building Great Rapport
Eliciting Wonderful States In Ourselves And Others
Using Matching, Mirroring and Cross-Matching to Establish Non-Verbal Rapport
Establishing Verbal Rapport
Recognizing and Using Representational Systems
Recognizing Eye Accessing Cues
Changing States
Resolving Internal Conflicts
Creating Excellence with Circles Of Excellence
Understanding and Using the Meta Model
Understanding and Using the Milton Model
Eliciting Strategies And Values
Achieving Personal Congruence
Plotting Meaningful Outcomes
Creating Clear Strategies
Practicing Voice Tonality and Presentation Skills

This is by no means all we covered, either.

How Jonathan Teaches:

Jonathan teaches, as you can probably tell from reading about a typical day, using metaphors, stories, a few comedy routines, lecture, assigning exercises, questions and answers. He demonstrates everything as he teaches, so you learn much more than you are consciously aware of.

Some of the most interesting moments for me came each time I realized he was doing exactly what he was talking about doing. The first time was three or four days into the training -- my mouth dropped open and I must have looked rather weird, because he stopped and said "Yes, Kay?", and I think I said something terribly intelligent like "you're doing it, you're doing it."

This ability of Jonathan's to pay attention to all of us at the same time, to track our responses, was pretty amazing to me until I realized that all it was was sensory acuity and rapport skills... then it was totally amazing until I started to learn some of it!

He teaches by installation, which is a neat jargon word for the process I described, but he also explains and tells us when things are useful.

He's always willing to answer questions, although I found myself not always understanding. At that point I'd throw it into my subconscious, and let it brew for a while. Mostly the answers came out of that; occasionally I would just be able to phrase the question better and Jonathan would answer it later.

Location and Venue:

The training was held at the Busch Gardens Holiday Inn, in Tampa, Florida. Spring had not quite reached Washington, DC but it was in full force in Tampa. The weather was wonderful and the temperature in the comfortable range. (Not that we wouldn't have made it spring anyway after a few days of learning how to change our states!)

The training room was comfortable, too, big enough to move around for the cross-crawling exercises. NLP posters on the Meta Model, Milton Model, Submodalities, Goals, Anchoring and other NLP stuff were on the walls.

The hotel rooms were comfortable, well lit for those few times I wasn't too sleepy to do late night reading. Also, the hotel had and little snack and other things store that sold sodas and sandwiches... and alcoholic slurpees -- Frozen Margaritas and Fruit Daiquiris, beer, and a great assortment of Dove Bars! Yum! How much pleasure can you stand?

There were plenty of good restaurants within easy walking distance, and we went to several! Mostly as a whole group; we just didn't want to stop practicing -- on each other, on the servers, on strangers in the street. It was amazing to find how quickly our accumulating skills brought a smile to passing strangers -- and to ourselves.

Across the street from the Holiday Inn was University Mall. We went there for the rapport exercises, through the door marked "In Trance."

We used one evening to go to a Beatles Laser light show -- which was then, and recalled, one of the most wondrous evenings of my life. Several Beatle's songs which had been anchored previously into some not-so-resourceful states were re-anchored into some states that were extremely useful -- and pleasant.

Aftermath:

As I write this, it's been five months since I started the NLP Practioner Training. The first effects I noticed after the training was how much easier it was to read my NLP books. The second effect was an ability to easily control my states, most of the time, and the knowledge that I could anytime I wanted to.

The most frequent comment I got from others was something like... "you seem different... I don't know, lighter somehow." I take it as a compliment!

My life has changed a lot. Some of the ways are very subtle: a sense of comfort, a feeling of attractiveness, more positive responses from other people. I get more done at work because my focus is better; when I'm not focusing, I use NLP to start and increase my focus. I have more fun when I'm not working (and really, more fun working).

And in some ways things seem completely different. I can't explain exactly how, but the world is brighter and sparkly. You'll know what I mean, I think, if you've had a practitioner course; you'll find out when you take one, if you haven't yet.

I think it's the best thing I ever did for myself... so far.

Through this experience, I've gathered many things that I did not have before. I am able to see things, and see them from new perspectives. I have learned and am still learning how to improve both myself as well as those with whom I come in contact. Things I have just described are somewhat vague in description yet very profound to me. I owe much of this trance-formation to Jon for providing the tools and facilitating the use of these new tools in a positive direction. Thank you.

Personal Enhancement Weekend Seminars

Colin Vermont
Los Angeles, CA USA

Wow! That's the best word to sum up a weekend with Jonathan Altfeld. When you go, expect some incredible personal breakthroughs.

I've known Jonathan for over a year. And it has been truly amazing to watch how rapidly he has mastered and integrated his NLP skills. I think one of the reasons for his incredible growth and natural understanding of NLP is he possesses that rarest of qualities in a trainer- The Man Walks His Talk. He has an intimate familiarity with everything he teaches, because he's fully explored its use in his own life. Added to this are his background in expert systems (knowledge modeling), and his cutting edge training with the top names in NLP.

Jonathan brings a very playful attitude to his trainings. His style is natural and refreshing. He keeps throwing new things at us to keep us just enough off balance and keep our minds sharp. He entertains with many stories and anecdotes, and does dead on (& flattering) impersonations of a number of trainers.

The seminar was held in Los Angeles, just 10 minutes from the airport. It went from Friday to Sunday, from 9:30 am to 6pm.

We started out with some simple matching and cross matching exercises. This led to a discussion on Rapport and how quickly it can be created. Next we learned some tools to control out state- anchoring, circles of excellence, and resource triangles. Once he demonstrated and we played with these techniques, he his shared with us his own personal touches, the little tricks he's discovered that make it quick, easy and elegant.

The advanced exercises touched on time-distortion (temporal predicates), values elicitation, structure of beliefs, swish, & logical levels.

To keep us lively and alert, Jonathan led us in some cross crawling exercises every morning and afternoon. His light and sound machines were also available whenever we wanted to use them.

The weekend was very experiential. No lectures or handouts. It wasn't about head knowledge. Just a brief description, stories, and anectdotes, and we jumped into the exercise.

During the seminar, the exercises were often tailored to the individual. Jonathan suggested before each exercise that he would think about what one of his goals or challenges was, and working with that would be his demonstration of the next tool we would learn. It was in this that Jonathan showed off his modeling skills. Sometimes one of the participants didn't understand a tool's description, and he would present the information in a way that made most sense to that person. Jonathan has an excellent ability to see to the crux of an issue and present the simplest solution. In my own case, Jonathan allowed me to clear up some long standing misconceptions I had, simply by suggesting an exercise where the group would go to the mall and say "hello" to people (don't laugh, I chose to do it, and it worked!).

As a result of the seminar, I personally gained many very powerful personal insights. I would say "about how I sabotage myself", but Jonathan does a very good job of framing everything in a positive light. "Sabotage" has a connotation of self blame and bad intentions. Not a very resourceful state. Jonathan truly believes that people aren't broken, they just do things that don't work. I used to think that I had to work on my "Identity issues". But I now realize that any definition of my "Identity" is actually a limitation. My feelings and my beliefs aren't my "Identity", they are just something I do, and I can chose to do something else. For me this is a profound insight. Working on my "Identity issues" isn't solving a problem, it's CREATING one.

The seminar finished with some coaching in finding our natural voice, walk, and way of moving.

All in all, one of the best, most varied, and personally impactful seminars I've ever attended. I highly recommend him.

My first exposure to NLP was a Tony Robbins tape set that I purchased years ago, listened to & put aside. Then I found a.p.nlp last year. I started reading Jonathan's posts & found them to be thoughtful, as well as insightful.

Life, as it is prone to do, gave me a couple good swift kicks & I came to the conclusion that I needed to do something for myself, to snap me out of my stagnation. I needed some serious self-improvement or, at the very least, a good attitude adjustment, so I decided to go to a seminar. I checked out www.altfeld.com & saw a seminar that I felt would give me the best "bang for my buck". I chose to attend the Personal Enhancement (formerly Personal Transformation) seminar.

I arrived in Tampa expecting to learn 'something' I could use in real life & left Tampa a new person with real skills I'm now using daily in real life. Seriously! The older woman next to me on the flight home remarked how CHARMING I was - & I can tell you truthfully that it had been a while since I've been called charming. But that was the old me, this is the new me! Charming, aren't I? I have not had that much fun learning about life & _how to live_ in years. Jonathan sets a fine example & is an excellent trainer.

Some of the topics covered & skills taught at the training were:

States: Identifying states, being able to get into state, being able to lead someone else into a specific state, Rep systems, Anchoring
Rapport: gaining rapport, building rapport, breaking rapport, chunking up, chunking down, matching, mirroring
Tonality/Voice: Alot of great tonality work - Jonathan taught his very cool technique for using a dual-tone voice & made sure that everyone was able to identify & use the technique
Other techniques: Exercises to get your left/right brain working & Sleight of Mouth

I can sincerely say that if you have the opportunity to do a training or seminar with Jonathan, then take it, or better still make that opportunity happen. It is well worth it.

I attended Jonathan Altfeld's Personal Transformation seminar a couple of weeks ago. I've attended lots of NLP trainings in my past & I can say that Jonathan is one of the best trainers I've seen. I learned a lot of valuable information that I had not previously been exposed to. I know he has recently completed trainings with Richard Bandler, so this probably adds to the amount of cool new stuff he presents.

Not only was the information newer than Ive seen but Jonathan's humorous presentation style makes learning the material fun & it helped me to learn the material much more rapidly.

Jonathan is very innovative & is constantly improving the material. For example he did an exercise on "Finding your Irresistable Voice," which teaches you to modulate your voice with a dual tone. He carefully worked with each one of us to make sure we were getting the skill. I think he has a tapeset coming out soon on how to do this also.

Jonathan was also very available & personable. Like in a lot of seminars we didn't always get started right on time every morning, but he made sure to make himself available during breaks & lunch & in the evenings to answer any questions we had. He even had us mirroring people at lunch in the mall. It was a lot of fun seeing how to apply stuff we had learned in the classroom out in the real world.

He also has great taste in music & we did lots of physical exercises to stimulate left-right communication in the brain. Man, my corpus collossum was pumped!

After attending the seminar I found myself feeling more motivated & actually using some of the things I had learned in my daily life! Jonathan didnt just teach the skills. When I left his training I felt different on the inside. I think taking those good feelings away with you allows you to continue on your own path with more motivation & confidence, rather than just having gained some knowledge that you'll never feel motivated to actually use.

I recommend to anyone who is interested in improving their life, in feeling better, & learning new skills to go see Jonathan.

After attending an NLP seminar with Jonathan Altfeld, I can only use one word to describe it: amazing! Throughout the weekend, I went through a metamorphosis, leaving the cocoon of my former limited self and now knowing that I can accomplish anything I desire. My only limit now is time. I was amazed to have seen some of my limiting beliefs just fade away and snap like delicate threads. Not only did these changes take place during the seminar, but I now have the tools necessary to make other changes to any aspect of my life. I now understand that the only thing holding me back was myself! Seeing Jonathan using the skills he was teaching in real life was also a major plus. He uses everything that he is teaching all of the time. He doesn't give stop until he knows that everyone has learned what they need to know.

In the past few days, since the seminar, I have developed more rapport with my family and co-workers. In the past, I would have been in a situation where meeting new people would have scared me immensely, and now, I can't wait to meet new people. My only regret is that I didn't do this sooner. If you are not living life to the fullest, then you owe it to yourself to go to one of his seminars.

I went the the seminar weekend, & really wanted to change most every aspect of my life. I never expected this to happen, but things in my life were to the point where I would have tried anything. Within 3 hours of arriving at the seminar, I started to feel so much better: not only about myself, but about everyone and everything around me. In about 3 hours, I was 100% satisfied with the seminar! Can you imagine how I felt in a few more hours? It's like, when a drunken man starts to sober up... he reaches a point where everything starts to fade in. You know what I'm talking about.

Slowly, in the period of a weekend, I started to solve the problems in my life. What was so great, and that I am still very thankful for today, is that Jonathan helped me to learn how to help myself. All of my friends can see a clear change in me. I now know that when I want something, I can just reach out and grab it... whereas before, I let the possibilities in life slip right by.

After the seminar was over, I had gotten everything I had wanted out of it and more! But, to my suprise, it was not even close to over! Over time, I slowly started to realize more and more things that I was capable of doing. The seminar was a truly great experience for me.
